Should I Stay or Should I Go? A Conversation Every Teacher Will Face

Recently, I hosted one of the most powerful and emotionally resonant episodes of the Languages Pedagogy Podcast. In this conversation, I sat down with Mike Leaman—a school administrator, principal, and someone who’s walked both the classroom and leadership paths—to talk about something many of us in education silently struggle with:

Should I keep going? Should I stay in the classroom… or is it time to step away?

This question isn’t just hypothetical—it’s deeply personal. Almost every teacher, at some point, will find themselves standing at that crossroads. The love for teaching doesn’t disappear, but the weight of systemic burnout, financial strain, and emotional exhaustion makes us wonder if staying is still sustainable.

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions. There’s a unique magic in witnessing your students grow, think critically, and achieve things they never thought possible. That spark you light in them—it’s something beyond words, something sacred. It’s purpose in motion.

But alongside that beauty, there’s a truth we don’t talk about enough: the emotional, financial, and psychological toll of being a teacher in a system that often undervalues us. We are underpaid, overworked, and burdened with bureaucratic expectations that leave little space for creativity or rest. We are asked to give more while receiving less.

In episodes 110 and 111, Mike and I explore this emotional landscape. We discuss how to navigate the shift from the classroom to a new role—whether inside education or beyond it. For some, this means becoming a mentor, coach, or teacher trainer. For others, it’s stepping outside the system entirely to explore new career paths that still align with their values.

Mike brings with him not only years of experience in administration but also empathy and insight. His goal—our goal—is to help teachers see that there is life beyond the classroom, and you don’t have to feel guilty for wanting something different. You’re not abandoning your calling; you’re evolving within it.

This episode isn’t about pushing anyone to leave—it’s about offering clarity. Some will stay and find new ways to thrive. Others will transition and continue to uplift education from another angle. Both are valid. Both are brave.

We also dig into the brokenness of the system. We talk about inclusion—but what happens when the very system that preaches equity excludes the educators holding it up? When teachers are left alone with unrealistic demands, mounting pressure, and minimal support, we have to ask—who is taking care of the teachers?

This episode is a call to reflection, to solidarity, and to action.

If you’ve ever felt torn between your passion and your wellbeing, between staying for your students and leaving for yourself—this one’s for you.

You’re not alone.

So join us. Listen to the conversation. Let us know your thoughts. Let’s keep supporting one another, spreading light, and building a better future for education—together.
